Customer Service
It seems like every time we go out to eat there is a big lack of customer service. I tell my partner that you should tip according to the service you get. If your server ignores you, and you have to yell across the room to get their attention for something you need, then you should give a smaller tip. If your server is there for your every wish, then you should give them a larger tip.

The whole business of tipping in the U.S. is messed up. For most restaurants, the servers is trained to get you the food, get you the bill, and then get you out the door so your table is available to the next person.
Tipping is mainly so we don't feel as guilty about the server not even getting minimum wage.
OK. Having been a server myself, I know that there are many reasons food can be late and most of them don't start with your server. Also food quality is not under the server's control. So I tip according to attitude. If my server is attentive and cheerful, he/she will get 20%, even if the kitchen delayed the food and the meal tastes like cardboard. But if the server is flippant or rude, he/she may only get a dollar.
